Charlie L. Murray Jr. was raised in Stockbridge, Georgia, a place that shaped his strong values, humility, and heart. Though country-grown, Washington, DC became his lifelong home. The city embraced him—and he, in return, devoted his life to it. While Georgia was always the foundation and center of his heart, Washington, DC was where he planted his roots, built his life, and poured out his love. Charlie could often be seen walking wherever he needed to go, a familiar and welcome presence throughout the city. He never let grass grow under his feet. Known by his family and community as an avid walker, this daily rhythm kept him fit, connected, and doing what he loved most—helping everyone he came into contact with. He gave people his time, a kind word, and a warm smile.
Charlie proudly served in the United States Air Force and was a Korean War Veteran, carrying a deep sense of duty and honor throughout his life. He later worked for the Treasury Department before transitioning into construction as a highly skilled cement mason. Mr. Murray quite literally had a hand in shaping Washington, DC—contributing to the city’s buildings, roads, subways, and structures that continue to support generations today. Alongside his strong work ethic and service, Charlie loved to laugh and enjoyed a good party, bringing joy, stories, and warmth wherever he gathered with family and friends.
Charlie was a proud member of the Veterans Administration, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), The American Legion, The Civic Association, and many other boards and associations throughout his life. He loved the Lord and was a devoted student of the Bible, history, law, and politics. In his quiet moments, he could often be found at one of his favorite places of study and reflection, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, where he spent countless hours reading, researching, and learning. Charlie had a deep love for knowledge and lifelong learning, and he consistently encouraged everyone around him to read, think, grow, and stay informed.
A dedicated, loving, and sacrificial giver, Charlie was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, granduncle, cousin, mentor, and loyal friend. His life was defined by faith, service, movement, joy, wisdom, and meaningful connection. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and in the city he helped build.
