Dr. Constance Elizabeth Brooks was born in Washington, D.C., on June 18, 1946, to
Gladys and Joshua Holley Brooks, Sr. “Cookie,” as she was affectionately known by
family, will always be remembered for her willingness to help others and love for math.
She attended Langdon Elementary School, Taft Jr. High School, and was a proud
graduate of McKinley Tech High School. Pursuing her love for teaching, Dr Brooks
earned her first degree at D.C. Teachers College (now the University of the District of
Columbia). Constance earned her Masters of Science degree from Howard University
and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Management at George
Washington University.
Dr. Brooks taught mathematics at McKinley High School, and tutored many in schools
and the community. After teaching in DC Public Schools, Constance served as an
Assistant Principal at Coolidge and Duke Ellington School of the Arts High Schools.
Continuing with her commitment to excellence, prior to her retirement, Dr. Brooks
served as an Associate Professor at Bowie State University.
Dr. Brooks was a dedicated member of her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated, Xi Omega Chapter. Dr. Brooks’ many honors included her induction into
Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity in Education and Pi Lamda Theta National
Honor Society and Professional Association in Education. She participated in the
Principals’ Center at Harvard Graduate School of Education, the IDEA Academy of
Fellows, and DC Public Schools’ Leadership in Educational Administration Development
Institute.
Constance is survived by her three brothers, Joshua Jr, Vernon Khalil and Phillip, God
children, Robert L. Singletary, Ryan Lucas Singletary, Vinnetta Singletary Raines,
nephews and nieces AbdusSalaam, Sajida, Shaunte’, Amatun Nuwr, Phylicia, Al
Abbass, Binyamiyn, and Daanyiel, dear friends, and a loving furry buddy, Joey.
Constance was succeeded in death by her parents, best friend Fannie Parks Singletary
and Godson Randall Singletary.
